I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but there's no single answer to your question -- every company sells different products differently. You'll need to play with many different compensation structures, and you'll likely need to keep changing them all the time. This is why one of our first hires was a knowledgeable VP of sales.

My sales force is paid a portion of each sale, in a one time lump sum.
This works for some markets, and not for others.
AFAIK in telecom a lot of folks get paid salary + recurring commission.
