Any relational database system can be used to build a data warehouse. At Plus Three we chose MySQL v4.1.x for our warehouse system. This choice was natural for us as we're largely a MySQL shop. We chose v4.1.x because it was the stable version when we started development.

When the transactions are themselves little pieces of revenue, the boss can ask, "How much revenue did we take in?" by adding up the transactions. But in most businesses, there are many transactions that are not little pieces of revenue. Deposits and withdrawals in a bank are transactions, but they are not revenue. Payments in advance for subscriptions and for insurance coverage are even worse.

Dashboards can vary by industries, by business functions, by altitude (organization or decision maker level) and by the sophistication of available skills and tools. Regardless of those differences here are so “rules” which will enable you to create dashboards that are impactful and geared towards driving actionability. 
" The core problem is the inability to identify what the critical most impactful metrics are and to communicate performance for those metrics in a way that drives action. "
